Default Bagobo-Mandaya-Manobo Bolo -- Rare

This highly unusual vintage bolo comes from Central Mindanao and is probably from the first half of the 20th C.

The hilt suggests Bagobo work, with typical brass ferrule and guard, and the wood pommel is similar to older Bagobo hilts, especially those from pre-WWII. The blade is a heavy, fat-belly bolo that is not typical of Bagobo work, but more reminiscent of Mandaya bolos. The scabbard is similar to Mandaya scabbards also.

It is most unusual to find elements of Bagobo and Mandaya work on the same sword. There is one group, however, who traditionally traded for weapons from both the Bagobo and Mandaya, and they are the Manobo who occupy the region between the historical lands of the Bagobo and Mandaya, primarily the province of Davao del Norte and the Agusan River area.

This sword is probably from the Manobo.

The blade is heavy and measures 13.5 inches in length and 5/16 inch wide at the hilt. Overall length 20 inches. There are a few age cracks in the wooden pommel. The handle is firmly attached, and this remains a solid functioning weapon of above average quality.

Price is $450.00 plus SHI.

Ian.
