Default Latest Punal

I love these little daggers from the Philippines. There is an almost endless variety. This one has a 6 1/2" blade and is 10 5/8" overall. Subtly pattern welded blade, Nickel silver scabbard, and banati hilt with 2 silver bands.

Steve

I've always liked that first one Wayne. I've tried for one of those several times, but haven't been lucky yet. Gotta love that short wide blade.

Where is that last one from? Is it an Indonesian badik?

Thanks for sharing. Anyone else fancy the punal/gunong? Love to see pics of other folks pieces.

hi steve, yes. 8" laminated steel blade, plain horn (?) grip. the only one i have with a fully covered scabbard. it is wood with a horn throat piece & a wire decorated copper section about a 1/4 in. wide, followed by the yellow metal section which has a drag braised to it's tip. the blade has a kris-like tang wrapped in cloth to fit it to the grip as in a kris....(the blade tip is undamaged, the apparent missing bit is the terrycloth nap from the towel it's sitting on obscuring that bit a bit )

the photo of the short gunong was taken shortly after arrival, the corrosion has been brass brushed off & blade oiled, the scabbard is split wood with the silver fittings, the blade corrosion corresponded to the visible band of scabbard wood & the slight gaps in the sides, ie. the wood is not glued or sealed & a piece of paper will slide into the gap...one of my favourite knives. i use the photo as an avatar on another forum. only we could think of a 6.5 inch bladed knife as 'short'

Found another little one on Ebay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWN:IT&ih=002

It has a nice wooden scabbard, with one metal ring missing. The blade is pattern welded, although fairly low contrast, and is very sharp on both sides.
Here are 3 pics.
Steve

Wow, nice bargin Steve! Especially given all the talk on these forums about the jacked up prices these days. You have a good eye and this beauty certainly cleaned up nice, didn't it.

Well Steve, you just showed me that these with this kind of engraving are not just tourist pieces because of the damascus steel.

also - on the scabbard I see evidence of acutally 2 bands missing - a small one in the middle and a larger one at the bottom.

Wonderful blade!

We're ALL learning here. I wouldn't have bet on it being pattern welded either.

Two bands eh? I think I have just enough silver for that. Thanks!

Some of mine.

The one with the see-through celluloid scabbard and the all ivory one are only about 7" long.

I really like the one with the Naga scales. Has laquer on it from a previous owner. Need to clean it off.
