Try to find Hands of Time: The Crafts of Aceh by Barbara Leigh. ISBN 979 428 110 7 Then there are of course dozens of old articles and books about Aceh but I think she has compiled most of it nicely together in her book. Michael |

Hi Michael thanks I just order the book ( I did have it in my collection but someone did not give it back to me)
but I am looking for a book that tells what it means if the is one 2 or 3 golden crowns on the weapon maybe you now a special book about this subject You are the book search expert if some one can find it it will be you. Ben |

Probably the amount of golden crowns only shows how rich the owner was?
Maybe you could find something in this article: De Sikin by P. Vermieren from De Vrienden van het Etnografisch Museum Antwerpen, XIV(2), 2 (1987). Haven't found it yet myself. But you are closer to Antwerpen than I am. Please arrange a copy for me too. Michael |

I am out of town so I do not have my copy of Barbara Leigh's book but I remember it did talk about the shape on these devices near the handle I will try to look it up friday night when I get home

OK In "Hands of Time" they call the v shaped design at the hilt of the panjang and the rencongPucuk Rebung it is supposed to represent the sprouting bamboo. the figure at teh end of the hule mea apet is called duan tebu I need to get a good translation on that term. They describe it as representing the sprouting sugar cane.

John, I knew a little about acehnese weapon & culture.
Pucuk Rebung Motif Pucuk = the sprout Rebung = bamboo shoots. In indo malay rebung were used as food, my mother often cooked bamboo shoots curry This motif also can be found in their tradisional clothes, sarong and Woven cloth. Pucuk Rebung also can be found in other ethnic / region such as malay, lampung, riau, palembang and other part of sumatra. West sumatran / Minangkabau named this motif as Pucuak Rabuang . The Pucuk Rebong symbolised the fertility and the happiness in the life of humankind and the symbol of the life. Pic of Rebung Pucuk Rebung ( the tip of cloth ) on Tapis ( Lampung Woven cloth ), Pic of Pucuk Rebung on Songket Palembang ( Palembang Woven cloth ) Cropped & Sharpen image of original dajak pics These image clearly show the triangular-shaped pattern similiar to Pic of Rebung. Aceh Translation related to weaponry Daun = Leaf Tebu = Sugar Cane Daun Tebu = Sugar Cane Leaf Meu is verb Apet = jaga / kawal = Guarded Meu Apet = penjaga / pengawal = "The guard" Hulu = gagang = Hilt Peusangan = name of river / name of subdistricts in Bireuen, Aceh Beunteung = The fence that was made from bamboo Meutampo Meueh = Bersepuh Emas = "Gold Polish / Gold Plating" According to some acehnesse, the gold on hilt / handle / scabbard only can be made / owned for Panglima ( commander , chieftains ), teungku ( the noble ) and hig respected persons.
