Is it me or is the grip on this viking era sword they found there way too big?

I suspect it's due to it being in exceptionally good condition after surviving in a relatively oxygen free environment, rather than heavily oxidised (therefore thinner) after being buried underground.

What I mean is it seems rather long. I thought the grips were usually relatively short and the idea is that one would actually grip the pommel, i.e.:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxqLgRXuNlU But I'm not super familiar with Viking era swords so perhaps there was a lot more variation in grip length than I am aware of. EDIT: Or perhaps the pommel is actually incomplete and the bottom of it has actually moved up the tang over the years? |

OK I understand, sorry I misunderstood your question.
I know nothing of Viking swords but see your point, the grip certainly doesn't look as small as many images. |

Perhaps there are experts on viking era swords on the vikingsword forums who could comment?
