Dajak,

Thanks for showing your Murut Parang.
This Parang is quite rare and yours is the best one of them I have seen.
The binding on the hilt is quite unusual, isn't it? Mine has f.i. parallell brass wire.
Yours resemble more the kind of binding one would expect on a Moro sword, like a Sulu Kris?
But maybe that's not so strange considering the mix of cultures in NW Borneo?

Thanks Dajak,

My Murut Parang has a more regular hilt. But it has a scabbard with flower patterns.
The blade is laminated and actually the binding on the hilt is similar to yours now when I checked it.
I must have mixed it up with another Sangkit than mine.

Thumbs up Great swords

Dajak and Michael:

Wonderful pictures of a rare sword. Outstanding examples and beautifully maintained. Thanks for showing them to us.

I'm sure that I am not the only collector who has added this sword to his (or her) "must-have-one" list.

Ian.

The person that sold me this told me it was an Indonesian Klewang. I was too lazy to research it. Now thanks to Dayak, I now know it's origin.

Dayak, what is your hilt made of , horn?

Can someone tell me what my hilt is made of.
BTW you both have excellent examples.

Default Murut Parang

For me personally, Dajak has provided yet another surprise/puzzle in that although I've not seen a Murut parang as such particularly the style of the handle, the example of the lad on the old postcard implies to be so. Again I'm scratching my head and if so I'd say these parangs would be extremely rare nowadays and not amongst the modern productions. My curiosity has been roused and I guess I'll keep my attention on until I see one. The stamp is postmarked with Sandakan, a town at the East coast of Sabah, once a capital of British North Borneo and where my wife comes from.

You're truely a great collector of Borneon stuff Ben!

The Handle off Kino s looks like wood with Horn

The handle looks like buffalo Horn the one I have.

Great Parangs Ben and Kino!

Dajak, could you please also post the N Borneo spear as promised?
The last Parang of yours is really interesting.
The hilt looks like a Sangkit but the blade doesn't?
I am also puzzled by the guard?
Could it be a unique, one of a kind, Murut Pedang/Parang?

It is an old sankit probably the first type you see the pakayun blade type 2 and brass guard but sankit hilt

the spear you see between the scabbard and the Sankit

What lovely silver repousse on these pieces. I assume that they belonged to the chieftain/datu class, yes?
