Ottoman Army Officer's Sword
Here is one I like. I think it is an Ottoman army officer's sword. I believe this one dates to WWI or a few years earlier. It was around this time that most nations were rushing to modernize their armies, and this sword is probably a result of Turkey's efforts to do so. The hilt appears to be hand-carved horn reinforced with twisted brass wire. The integrated cross and knuckle guard is brass with one side sporting the Ottoman crescent and star. The bolsters, pommel and top of the hilt are all also brass. The hilt terminates with a pommel ring. I think the blade is wootz. This must have been a fearsome weapon. It is light as a feather, and very strong.
I make a lot of mistakes so I would appreciate knowing if any of this is questionable. Thanks! Harry |
