My first collection of Mandau

I just starting to like tribal swords pasrticular Dayak's sword.. although I am dayak, I dont have much of mandau.. and all authentic mandau from my ancestor goes to the oldest son, as I am not the oldest of the family thus I dont get it..

According to the costums we cannot own mondau if the length is more than our head diameter.. as this mandau wouldnt be friend for the owner. Actually there is a calculation formula, called "limebalas raja pahlawan" honestly I dont know much about this.. If I come back to my hometown I will do travel to upriver to find any legit resource about this formula..

Thank you for posting these pictures.
Very interesting to see mandaus from your perspective and from Borneo in the present time.

The 2nd from the left, is that the mantikei blade ?
Do you have some more close ups of the blade and the scabbard.

I see that there are a lot of amulets on that example.
Can you tell us something about the amulets ?

You are already doing quite ok and I'm sure your collection will continue to grow: I'd assume that most members here are caretakers of less than 4 mandau, myself included. Then there are the Borneo specialists with lots of pieces though... It does help if you're living in the Netherlands (or Europe, at least) to get access to the really old examples. Prices are usually high though...

Head circumference? Diameter would be certainly too short and also with circumference one would wonder about the owners of some of the longer mandau blades...

Yes, that would be nice - I guess this measurement/calculation is a little more complex.


BTW, if you want attached pics to appear in a fixed order, then you need to upload them seperately in the correct order (upload of several files will result in jumbled pics - that's a bit annoying).

The 1st big mandau is mantikei mix with Djangkarang (another metal stone).. This is mantikei


The amulet called "Onggoh" or "basal" it consist of bones, fangs, bambu ketemu ruas, "magical oil" for kebal or Invulnerable weapons.. there are 2 oil there one is "minyak garak" and second "minyak taguh".. i never try it as previous owner never taking care it by "giving foods to the spirits that stay in it.. neither do I.. to test it actually we can bind it to a chicken or goat and try to butcher it if the the chicken or goat is proof that means this is original.. Back when riot it year 2001 in my place a lots of things like this.. one things that very odd to me.. which I saw it with my own eyes.. someone cut off someone head.. it was bloody and he take her head again and put back to her body.. and she is alive.. (you may not believe it but this is not a magic trick)..

Yes.. I want to find the floating mandau.. I allready know someone who owns it.. hope he want to sell or even give it.. I know there are plenty of our vintage relics in Netherland.. Ik hoop dat ik kan gaan naar Nederland .. en het verzamelen van mijn voorouder relikwieën

Also I am planing to buy tangkitn/ parang latok and felepet/pakayun and dohong.. Dohong is the most high class weapon in my sub tribes (dayak ngaju).. Tangkitn is for Dayak Selako dan Dayak Kenayatn.. pakayun and felepet is for Lun Dayeh and Muruts

This is my friend's mandau talisman there are plenty of oil jars each had its own purpose but one if them for weapons proof..

You have some very interesting info!. And this is fascinating. Do you have pics of examples of these?

Also, do you happen to know any Mandau and mandau scabbard restorer/maker in Sabah or Kalimantan? If so would appreciate if you can let me know as I have a few mandaus that need some minor repairs to the rattan weaving and resin on the hilts. I may be able to visit them as I stay in Malaysia.

Are there any other such size/measurement legend or consideration given to other weapons such as the Pakayun?
