In Holland for at least 50 years that is how long the previous owner had it Total length is 2.30 m Ofcourse if there is another opininion about the origin i like to hear it . Regards , Danny |

A VERY NICE SPEAR NOT OFTEN SEEN, I HAVE VERY LITTLE INFORMATION ON THE CELEBES SO CAN'T BE OF MUCH HELP. THEY DO USE HAIR ON THEIR SWORDS THERE SO HAIR ON A SPEAR WOULD FIT. THE HAIR REMINDS ME OF THAT USED ON NAGA WEAPONS FROM INDIA, ASSAM ,ECT. BUT IS NOT NEATLY AND EVENLY CUT AS THEY DO.

Tawara
It probably is a tawara from Celebes (see: Traditional Weapons of the Indonesian Archipelago, page 143). The hair, usually goat's hair, should not run op to the point, but should stop about half way the shaft. I'll post a picture later. Does the foot of the shaft have an iron spike? Congrats with this acquisition!

Hello Danny,
The decorated woodcarving and the hair looks familiar. I have similar examples and as far as I know this is indeed celebes. Not a tawara as far as I am concerned. |

Here a nice photograph of a row of spears from Celebes, made by Albert Grubauer around 1911.
