THE CHINESE VERSION OF TOM TERRIFIC'S HAT
I AM VERY SUSPECIOUS OF EVERYTHING COMING OUT OF CHINA ESPECIALLY AFTER THEY PASSED THE NO EXPORT OF ANYTHING OVER 100 YEARS OLD LAW. THEY HAVE MADE MANY REPLICAS FOR A VERY LONG TIME IN CHINA MOST WERE PATTERENED AFTER ACTUAL ARTEFACTS AND SOME ARE QUITE GOOD ESPECIALLY IN THE BRONZE ITEMS. THEY SEEM TO HAVE RAN OUT OF THEIR OLD STOCK AS THEY ARE SEEN LESS ON EBAY THESE DAYS. THE MORE RECENT ITEMS SEEM TO HAVE DRIFTED INTO THE FANTASY REALM INSTEAD OF STAYING WITH HISTORICAL REPLICAS. THE BRONZE SWORDS COMMING OUT NOW OFTEN RESEMBLE SOMETHING FROM A EPISODE OF XENA THE WARRIOR PRINCESS THAN OF SOMETHING THAT ACTUALLY EXISTED IN THE PAST. I SUSPECT THE ARMOR AND HELMET FALL INTO THIS CATEGORY OR WERE PERHAPS MOVIE PROPS OR SOME SORT OF PARADE OR CEREMONIAL GARB. JUST MY OPINION AS I CAN'T STUDY THEM CLOSELY AND AM NOT AN EXPERT ON CHINESE ARMOR OR HELMETS. IF THE PRICE WAS RIGHT THEY WOULD MAKE AN INTERESTING COSTUME IF IT FITS? IT JUST NEEDS SOME OSTRICH FEATHERS IN THE HELMET. |

It's meant to be Tibetan (from the script). Possibly Mongolian. One-piece bowls are very rare in Tibetan/Mongol helmets (much more common in China, but I think still rare, if we exclude theatrical costume and modern fakes). Most of these on the market are fake. Therefore, this one is probably fake.
Looks OK for the general style, except for the one-piece bowl. |
