This is slightly off topic but it is related to the Kris so here it goes...
Here is a picture of an indonesian prince. The period is probably around 1900. He is wearing a kris in a european style sabre holder. The kris seems Maduran to me but it is hard to tell. It is a nice kris picture to share and I hope to get some more info too.... Regards, Erik |

I don't think this is off topic, because the picture you posted is about the way to wear keris too. There are at least 4 to 5 ways to wear keris. And this is one of them, we in Jawa call this way as "anganggar" (wear keris as an 'anggar', or as a 'sabre' like you said...). The way soldiers or commander of soldiers used to wear their kerises in war time... Who is he? I am sure, this is a very popular personality, and Indonesian painter -- once wellknown also in the Netherlands and also Germany in the end of 1800s. His name is RADEN SALEH SYARIF BUSTAMAN... You may read his biography in this site http://www.bkpm.org/princeradensaleh.htm for instance... Regards, GANJAWULUNG Last edited by ganjawulung; 2nd February 2009 at 01:12 AM. Reason: Wrong year |

Yes. And these are more paintings by Raden Saleh from European collections -- I think they are all in the Netherlands, Germany or France...

Raden Saleh, the father of modern Indonesian painting. His home in Cikini, Jakarta, is now the TIM art centre.

What I was wondering is : Is it part of a book, or just a loose page of a book ? Best regards, Willem |

Hi Willem,
It is neither it is an original photo, as I mentioned form my photo collection. The format is the so called CDV (Carte de Visite). At the bottom you can see the name of the photographer in The Hague. I have a small collection of these kind of photo's mainly of officers with the Dutch Military Order of William which is a military historic interest of mine (www.mwo.6x.to). This prince had a double interest to me, the combination of interesting orders (not the aforementioned MWO) and the keris! Judging from what I have seen on the websites this is a picture not published before. Regards, Erik Quote:

Thanks Erik,
What kind of orders is he wearing ? can you tell by this picture ? And the helmet reminds me a bit of old KNIL helments. Where variations of the KNIL helmets also used ? Best regards, Willem |
