A hand cannon ... that not a signal mortar
I do not post this example in the vertical position as, despite the existing lip under the touch hole, there is no deep pan in it to load the priming powder for the ignition of a signal mortar, this would then be a protection shield for a hand cannon gunner.
With a faceted (octogonal) section and a paralel profile, it could well be from the mid-end XV century. The markings are well defined and, worthy of note, residuals of red paint are visible, making one wonder if this is red lead minium used in medieval decoration ... or just my fantasy. Lenght 22 cms. diameter 7,5 cms. caliber 29 m/m. weight 6,7 Kgs. . |
