What do you think about the ebay item number 6593728975? Verry impressionating, but real? I personally have my doubts, but I never saw a modern one in such quality...

Good or bad, old or new, this Rajput saber is impressive ... Expensive too but not a bad toy, looks pretty solid and it has all the fascinating talwar elements with perhaps the lack of paraj (the knuckle guard). I can even smell the spicy wood aroma of that wood behind the red velvet. And that wootz alone ... hmmm ... worth more than all the gold of the koftigiri to me....
What I like the most about it, I guess, is the fact that is so darn pure and Hindustani, like an ethnic landmark... Next Christmas, if any big, jolly red thing comes to me it better be a sword like that

This is not wootz, it is a modern damascus that is pretty but not hold sharp edge. I have seen these pieces all around, they dont worth anything more than decoration items.

How is the "modern Damascus" made anyway ? Hand or machine ?

Radu, I believe this is machine pattern-welded. There may be a human element to the production process but I think we're looking at mechanical hammer, at least. I would guess the billets are produced by machine and the blades formed by stock removal. I'm uncertain what, if any, heat-treat these recieve.

A couple years ago, there was a company called "Shah Jahans" that was selling very similar swords and knives with this "birds-eye" pattern on eBay, and some very similar blade blanks will appear on the market from time to time. I believe some members here have had a fair amount of experience with that company's products and can comment. Personally, I've handled a few knife-sized examples with rebated edges.

As I said above, I think these are pretty things.
