According to this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_Department_(United_Kingdom), the War Department was officially named this 1855-57. Before that it was officially named something else (and stamped its property differently?).

The inspection marking Crown/E/23, "E" being Enfield. Most likely a Household Cavalry cuirasse. Very nice find, wish I had one!

Thank you all for your honest opinion. I am still a bit puzzled, but at least I know what direction my research should head.
If you will have any more information about other marking, I would greatly appreciate it. |
