You're certainly right Andrew.

Perhaps we should add cricket fighting to the list. I don't think that anyone here objects to insects chewing each other up....?

Getting back to the subject at hand, those are interesting cockfighting knives. I, for one, am surprised that they have smooth tangs. In my ignorance, I would have thought that they would be bent or something so that they could be fastened more securely.

Default Those blades can kill!

Here's one from the local news: http://www.zamboanga.com/news/Z-NEWS...lls_cocker.htm

Cockfighting is the national past time in the Philippines. When the word "cockpit" is mentioned it has nothing to do with a jet airplane. And which Philippine city has the most number of cockpits? Zamboanga!

Some cockfighting facts:

The fighting-cock almost became the American national emblem. It lost by one vote to the American eagle.

Some famous cockfighting afficionados: Julius Caesar, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln (was a cockfighting referee).

Does anyone have pictures of an armed bird? To me it looks as if a blade is lashed to each talon? Slashed to death at the balls Tim

you got that right! not just in the Philippines, but wherever there's a filipino community, or any town that has at least three filipinos

tim,
the cock's natural spurs are trimmed and only one 'slasher' is tied on each gamecock. see zamboanga's picture...

Sorry guys, just wanted to voice my opposition to bullfights - never I seen a sport more cowardly. Bulls are clearly disoriented. They are peckled with darts by guys who readily jump behind huge wooden shields, if the bull is to even look in their direction. In the end some guy with a sword comes to the arena, at this point the bull is tired, slow and bleeding. The great achievement of this person (torero I presume ?) is to trick this bull into launching couple of times against the famed red cloth.

In short I would much rather see gladiatorial games (I have nothing against willing individuals killing each other in the ring), than this theatrical version of a butcher shop.
