Strange piece

Has anyone ever seen something of this kind?
Total length 8 1/2 inches ( over 21 cms. ).
Cast steel or iron.
The blade is hollow ground and square sectioned.
Does the hilt function as a spanner ?
Would this be a tool or a weapon?
Any help would be wellcome.

Just a guess but could this be a lamplighters tool. I have read of them but never seen one. There was a company that made Victor tools that was bought out years ago by stanley. Thier planes are collected by tool collectors, but that may not be this Victor

Yup, I think it's some kind of tool or accessory.
Looks it's from the Victor-ian era.

Victor makes, or made, oxy-acetylene welding equipment. So the lamp lighting tool makes sense. The wrench (spanner) on the end could turn a valve. Don't know about the knife end.

MY GUESS WOULD BE A LETTER OPENER DUE TO THE SIZE. MANY COMPANYS MADE ADVERTIZEMENT LETTER OPENERS ,WATCH FOBS, POCKET KNIVES ECT. TO GIVE TO GOOD CUSTOMERS. THE RIB DOWN THE MIDDLE OF THE BLADE LOOKS LIKE IT MIGHT INTERFERE WITH LETTER OPENING BUT OTHER THAN THAT IT SHOULD WORK GIVE IT A TRY. NICE ITEM

I actually got this thing, to "create" myself the problem to find out what it is ... curiosity is one of my manias

It came for free, at buying an unvulgar Maynard pat. 1845 priming tape lockplate, for a Greene Carbine, made in 1856 for the British to fight the Crimeian war.
I had a hope it was relative to weaponry, with that stiletto shaft blade and the crossed sabres in the brand. Not necessarily victor-ian

but some old, as not looking to have been made just the other day. The wrench version also came to mind, but wasn't totally convincing, as too small and rough to be such, if you think of welding or cutting nozzle spanners. The letter openner was also considered, but they wouldn't need to make it with a four sided profile, if that was their intention. Unless it was intended to resemble some kind of tool, like a rust ( or other ) scraper ... or a key to enter some orifice and turn something

. I googled "victor" under oxi-acetylene, after your input. Plenty results, but not the old stuff, with something depicting their logo, to check on the crossed saber figure.

again hearsay only but I have been told that lamplighters had a took to turn on the valve that was also a stabbing weapon to protect them as they often had to light lamps in areas where there was a great deal of crime
