Kris Handle...
found a dealer that carry rattan strips, which is real nice and pliable. well, i had a kris handle that restored using twine, but i was wondering how it would look with rattan strips (there's one on cato's book). so here's the kris when i acquired it:

well, like i said, with this rattan strips, i think i can even make it look more bootyful. this is preliminary since i just wanna see how it looks. without stain, it looks pretty cool already. my question is, does anyone owns a kris with rattan strip handle and could you please kindly post it so i can see the patterns invlove? i think those type of kris handle is nort as common; either that or it came off a while back and rewrapped with cord instead. the rattan stripp handle on this type of kris i believe, matches better, IMHO...
thanks in advance, ron |

I would have just applied some pitch to the cord wrap that would have done the trick. You wrapped it ok but you should try using thinner strips of rattan. The wide stuff seems a bit much for a 5" grip. Lew |

thanks for the suggestion, lew. the cord does look nice, with pitch even, but most of my krises has cord grips and zero rattan grips. yeah it kinda look plain. i do have a thinner rattan strip which i used to work on my pira scabbard (to be stained later). like i said i'm just experimenting on this type of grip...

Spunger, Here are a few photos of rattan wrapped hilts. AFAIK, these are original to the swords. Each of them wrapped differently, all intricate. I have shown some wrapping to basket weavers, to see if they could copy it, I haven't found one that could, one came close. Good luck in your project.

Nice set, the double pattern is often found using wire brass, copper or silver.

Spunger, I think the weave is, 2 sets of 3 strands of rattan(totaling 6), opposite each other. As they go around the hilt, one set goes up on one side the other goes down the opposite side, you need four sets of hands totaling 8. Don't get them tangled up (the hands), if it doesn't work try again. It's very easy, anyone can do it, except me.

Rick,
Thanks for the info. That will certainly help to restore lost bands on scabbards. I think the best way to weave with rattan is wet. The rattan will be more flexible. I suppose if rattan is used dry it will break very easily. |

Agreed. I always work with wet rattan. Also, it shrinks a little as it dries which helps tighten up the weave somewhat.
