Whalebone Kampilan Restoration

Greetings folks!

Well, here is another restoration I did for the present owner of this famous whalebone kampilan. Here are before and after pictures. The new bands are silver, the hair naturally colored horsehair, and I made a brass hand guard bar to replace the missing one on the other side.

Great work Jose. What did you use to condition the braiding on the hilt and the whale bone itself and could you please show a picture of the other side of the hilt?

Hi Jose,

I really like to see your restorework especially in silver ( I hope to reach that level once )
on the hair for this kamp I should prefer to let the piece without.
there nothing wrong with an old kamp who lost his hair ( like an old man)

Sure I'm game - here is the other side with the brass guard I made - matches the other one.

Also, Mandaukid, the customer specifically wanted the hair.

Nice silver work Battara. Did you use sterling?
How was the length of the hairs determined?

BTW, I don't know why this Kamp is so special

........sigh.....

Hi Kino,

Yes I used sterling. They often used sterling to coin silver. Occasionally higher grades of silver, but that then becomes too soft.

The owner wanted it cut, so I loosely based it on others like this and my own ivory kampilan hair.

Yeah it is a special piece - had I the money, I would have bought it, but.....ah......oh well........

I was at least happy to have the privilege of working on it.
