Default Old African Stabbing Spear

A very nice, old stabbing spear. Hand forged head with thick midrib (blade 12" / 30cms long) and 'dished' , chisel butt . Shaft approx 1" diameter, fur covered (2 sections) and stitched, the longer 'hand' section is heavily worn. A bulbous part of the shaft just before the butt. Head and but socketted and fixed with 'homemade' nails.

OAL 60" (152 cms) weighs 2.5 lbs.

I believe this to be late 19thC ....but could be very early 20th.

No idea to origin....so suggestions gratefully recieved, as are any comments, thank you

Regards David

The spear is from the Dan tribe late 19th to early 20th century. Here is one from my collection. Yours is a great example Congrats

Hî David,
Have you got the bilingual work "Waffen aus Zentral-Africa" ?
It contains zillions of weapons.

Thank you for the replies,

Lew ....thats a very nice spear I did wonder whether mine was Ashanti .....but they tend to have spike butts. Thanks Tim, I'm quite pleased with it. I love the 'wear' on the animal skin covering....which is worn through to the shaft where the thumb would be placed. A real 'user' that has been 'used'

Hi 'Nando,
no, unfortunately I do not have "Waffen aus Zentral-Africa" ....an excellent reference.......but expensive. When finances allow I will get a copy......trouble is, sharp, pointy things keep saying to me "buy me" ....

Kind Regards David
