That's cool!! It's a Japanese kogatana mounted up as a mini fancy tanto, wonder if it was a gift to a samurai child for the boys' festival?

What is the significance of the heart shape in Japanese sword mounts? I have seen them it seems mostly on scabbard tip mounts. What is the term for this heart shaped figure?

The heart shaped piercing is called an "inome" - supposed to represent a wild boar's eye.

I have never seen anything quite like it, but something about it says late 19th c. for tourists... I have been wrong before. Josh |
