I suspect defense only but there may also be symbolism behind this too.

To the best of my knowledge the idea is that you'd hold the dagger with the ring on the outside, ie the opposite side from your thumb. Much like a side ring on a sword, it should be primarily there to protect your hand from your opponent's sword.
