Default Two questions concerning Choora/Karud

Dear friends, I am happy to be able to join the discussions here.

I have fallen in love with choora and karud blades.

Two questions:

1) Does anyone know how these daggers were carried? Richard F. Burton described Affghans (sic) carrying charays in their "cummerbunds' (Sind Revisited). I wrapped a waist sash round myself, tried to position a sheathed choora in it, and the whole thing seemed dreadfully insecure.

2) Does anyone know what kind of wood was used to carve out the scabbards for these knives?

Thanks so much...

Hi John, welcome on board
using the "search" function, I found a pic with one with leather sheath,
that could give you at least an idea how they were carried,
even if it's just an alternative

Some had straps that would go around the waist just like a belt. The "cumarband" (Belt in English) were mainly made of leather. For a somewhat proper "desmaal e kamar" take a regular sized bedsheet, it should wrap around your waist at least twice, you'd need someones help to tie it around your waist properly. Make sure it is tight, not too tight that you can't breath, but tight enough, then take the knife and place it between the layers at about 45 degree. If you did the above steps properly the knife would stay in there securely. good luck.
