Neat sword! Given that pommel, I'd suggest that it's our first first example of an Indian "hanger"

hi,
i can offer no facts, except an opinion of which i am certain enough to bet my own money on at auction. i dont think this to be 17thC at all, but more like 19thC and maybe late at that.
firangis followed a type in construction, with the 17thC ones being of a much heavier overall look and much more substantial. the thin guard and the thin, over exaggerated pommel spike scream 19thC. the chisselling is very crude, by 17thC standard, but fine by 19thC chisselling.
the pommel is plain, the grip straight, the quillions flat - all say 19thC.
an interesting feature is is the fluted guard, but even this doesnt sway me as its shallow and unlike the fluted earlier pieces.
all just an opinion with nothing to back it up, but in auction i know i would only pay a 19thC price.

very good fearn! :-)

edit -
vandoo, i hope that i have not spoken out of turn. i had seen this advertised before and didnt agree with the description. but (in an attempt to redeem myself) its one of the best 19thC (in my opinion) examples i have seen
