Knife help??

Hi, I'm trying to find some info on this knife I have and thought I'd try here. I mainly collect American civil war items and I came across this:

I thought maybe it could be an early naval dirk? or some kind of naval knife. It has an ivory grip w/ brass pommel. Overall length is 12 inches with an 8 inch blade. Thanks for any help you can give me.

N African, I think. Where do we see those little square pommels out of? Is it Oman?
