WOODEN CARVING
Hello
Is this something interesting or just tourist? It is approximately 12 inches tall and quite well carved. I think the marble base is a later addition, screwed on for stability. I am trying to find a country of origin. I cannot find anything similar but possibly the Americas? It is two faced and signed Mario something. All suggestions welcome. Thanks Roy |

Maybe you should look a little closer to home; "In Caldragh a cemetery on Boa Island, Lower Lough Erne," you will find a two-headed Janus figure which could represent the Old Roman God Janus or the Celtic God Lugus which has been known to be represented with as many as 3 heads.
One could almost visualize the statue's headdress as being a Roman Centurion's helmet. |

Do a rubbing with pencil and paper of the signature and then check it out in a mirror and you might be about to read the last name.

There is something vaguely Polynesian in the motif.

This seems to be a rather modern creation - it may be futile trying to align its style with any old tradition... Any news on the signature? That seems to be the most valuable lead for further research IMHO. Regards, Kai |
