Great thread Barry. Personally, I am not a big fan of the "pot metal" ceremonial axes, but you have shown some other lovely examples here!

I TEND TO PREFER THE REAL BATTLE AXES BUT THE FANCY DECORATIVE PARADE AXES OR THOSE GOLD AND SILVER INLAYED ONES ARE NICE IN THEIR OWN WAY TOO.
#1. A SMALL ORNATE AX FROM INDIA. #2 THRU #8 VARIOUS INDIA OR INDO-PERSIAN AXES NO MEASUREMENTS. #9. INDO-PERSIAN SADDLE AX 30 INCH LONG ALL COMMENTS, CORRECTIONS AND INFORMATION ON THESE ARE WELCOME. Last edited by VANDOO; 12th May 2015 at 10:26 PM. |

THANKS FOR POSTING THE NICE EXAMPLES TRAJAN AND KRONCKEW ,QUITE A NICE SELECTION. ESTCRH I CAN'T SAY IF THE AX IS FROM INDIA FOR SURE BUT I DOUBT IT IS FROM EUROPE UNLESS IT WAS MADE UP TO LOOK LIKE A ORIENTAL AX WHEN SUCH THINGS WERE POPULAR THERE. THE MAN WITH TURBAN AND THE CRESCENT MOON LOOKS LIKE IT SHOWS THE ISLAMIC INFLUENCE OF PERSIA OR PERHAPS THE MOORS. I AM NOT SURE WHERE I GOT THE PICTURE BUT IT ENDED UP AS INDO PERSIAN IN MY FILES. SO PERHAPS IT DOES NOT BELONG IN THIS POST NICE TO HAVE A GOOD LARGE PICTURE OF IT TO LOOK AT ANYWAY. THANKS.

IT APPEARS TO BE A POT METAL WALL HANGER MADE FOR DECOR IT DOESN'T HAVE AN EDGE AS FAR AS I CAN SEE.
IT DOES BRING UP THE QUESTION ARE SUCH ITEMS ETHNOGRAPHIC? THEY ARE USUALLY EITHER REPLICAS OR FANTASY TYPE ITEMS MADE UP TO LOOK LIKE ANTIQUES OR SOMETHING FROM ANOTHER CULTURE, SO IN THAT REGARD ARE NOT ETHNOGRAPHIC. BUT ON THE OTHER HAND THEY WERE POPULAR ITEMS OF DECOR MADE IN EUROPE FOR EUROPEANS DOES THAT MAKE THEM ETHNOGRAPHIC DECOR. |
