I believe this is called a trousse. They generally come from China. Yours looks nice as well as old. Too bad the chopsticks are missing, they where probably ivory. This is an eating implement, not a weapon, though i suppose in a pinch...

Perhaps, but i have seen more than one trousse with ivory chopsticks. This looks like a fairly high quality piece, so i wouldn't be surprised if they were ivory....of course, they may just as well have been bone.....but we really will never know, will we.

Here's a nice example:

THE WORK ON THE HANDLE LOOKS LIKE SOME ON SOME WEAPONS I THINK I SAW IN A OLD FORUM POST THEY WERE FROM A CERTIAN REGION BUT I CAN'T REMEMBER ANY MORE THAN THAT PERHAPS SOMEONE ELSE WILL KNOW. THE CHOPSTICKS WERE PROBABLY BONE AS THAT APPEARS TO BE WHAT WAS USED IN THE HANDLE. IT SHOULD BE EASY TO FIND A PAIR OF BONE OR IVORY ONES TO MAKE THE SET COMPLETE. YOU CAN SEE HOW HIGH THEY SHOULD STICK UP FROM THE PICTURES AND THEN MEASURE TO SEE HOW LONG YOURS NEED TO BE. CHOPSTICKS ARE OF PRETTY UNIFORM LENGTH. NICE KNIFE
