I CAN'T REMEMBER THE NAME FOR THESE BUT I THINK THEY ARE FROM INDIA AND ARE ASSOCIATED WITH THE COORG PEOPLE ALONG THE MALABAR COAST. NO DOUBT VARIATIONS ON THE TYPE ARE PRESENT THRU-OUT INDIA AND PERHAPS INTO PERSIA? I HAD TO LOOK IT UP THE OLD COMPUTER BETWEEN THE EARS DOESN'T ALWAYS WORK. I THINK IT IS A MOPLAH PERHAPS USED BY THE MAPILLAS PEOPLE. IT LOOKS LIKE A GOOD OLD EXAMPLE. FANCIER THAN MY EXAMPLE AND A BIT DIFFERENT.

HI VANDOO
IN MALABAR COAST THEY HAVE THE MOPLAH KATTIS AND IN COORG THEY ARE CALLED ADYA KATTIS,WHICH WERE USED BY THE COORGI WARRIORS DURING BATTLES AND ALWAYS WORN BY THE MEN DURING TRADITIONAL CEREMONYS. SO I ASSUME THIS ONE IS FROM KERALA ,THE MALABAR COAST,POSTING SOME EXAMPLES OF THE COORGI BILLHOOKS OR KATTHIS. THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION |

I THINK THE MOPLAH IS DIFFERENT FROM THE ADYA KATTI FOR ONE THING IT IS SMALLER AND LIGHTER. THE ADYA KATTIS IS PRIMARILY A WEAPON AND THE MOPLAH MAY BE MORE OF A CEREMONIAL KNIFE. I CAN'T REMEMBER WHERE I READ THAT BUT I THINK IT MAY BE CORRECT.
#1. THRU #6. VARIATIONS FROM THE MALIBAR COAST CLOSE TO MOPLAH SO PERHAPS VARIATIONS. #7. THRU #10 ADYA KATTIA ,MALABAR SWORD #11. A MOPLAH #12. A FANCY SILVER PICHANGATTI 19 TH CENTURY, BLADE 19 CM. |

THERE IS SOMETHING SIMILAR IN NEPAL THAT IS A SACRIFICIAL KNIFE IT IS CALLED A RAM DAO. THE DESIGN ON THE RAM DAO IS A CENTIPEDE AND AN EYE.
#1. COORG ,PICHANGETTI KNIFE SHOWING BLADE. #2. EXAMPLE OF A 19TH CENTURY RAM DAO FROM NEPAL, 75 CM. Last edited by VANDOO; 28th June 2016 at 05:14 PM. |
