Hi,
I’m not an expert and it’s hard to tell if something is likely original antique or not from photos alone, especially since copies can be very good and photos can be a little unclear in details. Also these swords are from an age before production was standardized by army regulations so most swords are different. There would also be regional differences and differences between suppliers. The blades look OK from the pictures and even in not great condition. The brass guard might look a bit funny on the first sword? It looks like one quillon ends with a round ball? Also the decorations on the brass don’t look too aged in the photos? The grip itself looks like a worn one should I think, and again it’s not even in that great condition. With regards to the scabbard, I have only ever seen ones which are identical in decorations on both sides, which is not to say that this type didn’t exist. Also the scabbards I have seen typically have slightly rounder tips whereas the one you show has a more square tip? On the whole I think it’s very good to be on your guard when buying antiques. The whole point of them is the age so if they are modern copies then it’s not at all what you thought you bought (not a close substitute) which sets you up for disappointment. If you have any doubts about the seller or the item it’s probably better to retreat and look for another opportunity. Also, it may be better to pay for something decent rather than expect to make an absolute bargain when chances are that you get ripped off instead. |

I have seen lots of FRINGIA sabres and in my opinion this is probably a good one. Compare it with the one in the pictures. With regards to the scabbard both sites are identical in decorations, quod erat demonstrandum.
