Default Wedung for comment

Hi

And the last one of the 4 arrivals of today a wedung. Molar tooth. I think the blade looks older than the rest. But I saw combinations like this before.

Best Thomas

A nice wedhung Thomas. If this is Surakarta then the pamor would mean this was only suitable for ranks of bupati and pangeran. I am not sure if the same rule would apply to Yogyakarta or earlier kingdoms.
I agree that the blade may be older than the dress. Certainly the fossilized molar tooth hilt is as i believe the use of this material in general is a relatively recent one.
I still remain curious about the medallion on the sheath. I have seen this on numerous wedhung sheaths, but have yet to hear any explanation of the possible symbolism of the form.

Hello David,

I'd be inclined to believe that this blade is the most recent of the lot acquired by Thomas, i.e. blade being contemporary with the hilt. Just a hunch though...

Regards,
Kai

I wasn't suggesting any great age for the blade. I'm just not sure it was born with that molar hilt though. But this is also just a hunch.
