WHILE THIS PRICE WAS WAY OUT OF MY CLASS IT WAS NOT TOO HIGH IF YOU LOOK AT THE ETHINOGRAPHIC ART (INVESTMENT ) MARKET. THIS IS AN EXCEPTIONAL EXAMPLE AND THE FORM IS A BIT DIFFERENT FROM THE USUAL FORMS. THE SIZE OF THE HEAD IS LARGER THAN USUAL, THE CARVING IS EXCELLENT, THE PATINA GOOD AND THERE IS PROVENANCE NOT TO MENTION THE FINE MARINE IVORY INLAY IN THE HEAD. ALL IN ALL A MUSEUM QUALITY PIECE WITH MINIMAL DAMMAGE TO THE HANDLE END.
THIS QUALITY DOES NOT SHOW UP ON EBAY OFTEN AND SELDOM ON SOTHBYS OR CHRISTIES AUCTIONS WHERE IT WOULD PROBABLY HAVE WENT HIGHER. YOU MIGHT WANT TO WATCH AND SEE IF IT SHOWS UP AT ONE OF THE BIG AUCTION HOUSES AND SEE WHAT IT SELLS FOR THERE.

IF I WERE A RICH MAN YADDA YADDA YADDA, IF I WERE A VERY RICH MAN!!

I visited the Hartford (CT) gun show this past weekend for the first time. The opening was quite subdued crowd-size-wise compared to Baltimore. While the show seems somewhat smaller table count-wise, there was a large number of quality dealers, though my impression was that fewer percentage-wise had an ethnographic focus.

The dealers were certainly not trying to track overall financial markets with their prices...

I would think that times like these can be rough on prices in the 'Basic Collector' grade examples .
I guess We shall see from the prices and offerings seen on eBay over the next year or so .

Meanwhile the astute investor could have done very well in the Stock Market last week selling with today's 400+ point jump (as of 11:30 ) .

I'm not a player in the share market, but those of my friends who are assure me that in Australia this current downturn is an average bear market and a wonderful opportunity to buy. They assure me that if they buy at or around the bottom, they'll make around 30% during the following 12 months. I'm getting lots of friendly pressure at the moment to involve myself in this rather refined form of gambling. But I'm not a gambler.

Remember 1987 and the mid-1970's?

A fine piece, from what the picture shows. In the art market - objects are worth precisely what people are prepared to pay. Does not seem over-priced in comparison with other similar Fijian throwing clubs at auction.
