Agree that it's a naval dirk, circa 1800-10, and it could be either Bit or American. Here's why! Britain fell in love with the 'Arabic' patterns following Nelson's Battle of the Nile. Dirk patterns changed from the stogy forms to the more Mid-Eastern around the turn of the century. Note the clipped point and Eastern decoration to the blade and scabbard. German (Solingen) importers were still sending their fine work to the Brits at this time. It should be noted, however, that America also adopted a more 'Turkish' styling to their weapons following the Barbary War and Stephen Decateur's adventure in Tripoli. This was when the United States marine sword changed into a pattern very closely resembling a kilij. If the hilt were still with it, we might have been able to pinpoint country of origin better. Still, I suspect one or the other versus other naval nations (France, Spain, Russia, etc). Very nice piece! I like the 'fouled anchor' at the crossguard.
