I have received a request from an acquaintance to try and ID a pair of little flintlock pistols of the turn off barrel type.
I guess this is quite a challenge; he has gone through all of his several books and had no result. . |

He has the wrong books! French pistol made by gunmaker DUPIARD at Mācon about 1790 and proofed at St. Etienne

The one i posted is small, but it comes as a pair; certainly not the pocket version.

The pistol in post 4 looks like its barrel has been cut of, at least the muzzle doesn't absolutely look as it should look normally!

Yes , I agree it looks odd but as you can see from attached it hasn't been cut down. The forend is chewed because the barrel pin lug had detached during its working life and the barrel was secured by an extemporary metal band. The fluted barrel is interesting as is the lack of provision for a ramrod. Maybe ladies were not expected to have to load their own pistols.

Not sure what your point was . Given the fluted barrel and side plate best guess is it actually North Italian.
I would like to think a Venetian courtesan might have caried a pistol like this even if it wasn't of the finest quality. Thats the pistol not the girl. Last edited by Raf; 27th November 2023 at 07:47 PM. Reason: added comment |
