I would say both blades are Javanese. A Solo dress for both of them would fit best.

Thank you Henk.
Cahaya I'm afraid that is all I have. I will see if I can get some close ups. What sections do you need? |

This blade is current era Madura production, possibly from a few years ago, say ten or 15 years ago.

Thanks Alan for clearing this up. I had a few of the mass produced maduran that I bought when I started collecting keris. Because of my ignorance, and the dealers greed, I paid more than USD 500.00 a piece. The quality was slightly higher than those non-pamored tourist craps often locally produced. I guess I was taken for a ride - big time. Never mind, I learned my lesson

So now they are Madurese rather than Javanese. Does this mean that they need Madura dress?

Hi Jose, I think it means that they are of Maduran manufacture (someone please correct me if I'm incorrect) rather than uniquely Maduran in form.

Hi Battara,
It will be appropriate too, if you put Javanese dresses on both. The style is Javanese, although may be they are maduran manufacture (not pretty sure). Gayaman Surakarta or Yogyakarta is better than "ladrang" (Solo) or "branggah" (Yogya)... Ganjawulung |

I did not give the opinion that both blades were of Madura manufacture.
I provided my opinion directly under the pictures of the waved blade and I said :- "This blade is current era Madura production, possibly from a few years ago, say ten or 15 years ago." From the picture I am not prepared to say what the straight blade might be. It might be Madura, it might be Jawa, it might be something else. In any case, both blades would be OK in any sort of Javanese or Madurese dress, but neither is particularly valuable, so it would not be wise to spend a lot of money on the dress. |

Thx AlamShah for the pm. You see, there are a lot of blades like that (especially the wavy one) that look obviously...well, mass produced. They could be made in Madura, Jogja, even Kelantan for that matter, but the fact remains that these kinds of blades are not worth restoring.
By seeing the pictures only, It immediately reminds me of those blades that I bought when I was a real novice collector. After I discovered this forum, kampungnet, and of course Malay Art Gallery, couple with a few books that I bought along the way, then I realized that I was taken for a ride... ![]() I sold all those kerises (actually I got 3 of them) to a (collector)friend who didnt mind collecting lower end kerises - I sold them with huge losses off course ![]() |

Don't worry about the losses Penangsang---all education costs money.
The good teacher may appear to be more expensive, but he costs you less in the long run. |
