Pedang Lurus

Hi, I bought this Pedang Lurus in an auction and the reason I bought it was the pamor that was visible and the text is inlaid in relief, the grip is from a stone like material and I am not sure if it is black coral or akar Bahar. The sheath is in not the best shape but the blade is a nice form. As to be seen in the pictures. Hope someone can shed some light on this Pedang Lurus.

Looks like black coral (akar bahar) from what I can see.
It also looks like it may have been crudely carved.
When polished the black material almost seems like it absorbs light.

Hilt most likely is a mixture of Damar, wax and ground terracotta, which was used to fill the typical embossed hilt made of metal sheet. This metal sheet is gone, filling is left.

thank you so much about your thoughts and i think Gustav might be right, that is why it looks crudely carved.

The blade is nice so will see how to restore it.

In my opinion Gustav is very probably right.

This hilt looks like the core of a silver or brass or mamas hilt & the material is as Gustav has noted, this material is called "jabung".

I would begin work on the blade by washing under warm running water & using a toothbrush & dishwash detergent, pat dry & dry in sunlight, the blade needs to be hot from exposure to sunlight. This might be found to be sufficient, if it is not, I would suggest repeated applications of lime juice (do NOT use lemon), an old soft toothbrush works well for this.

The lime juice is thoroughly brushed onto the blade, then wait for a minute or so, rinse the blade with running water, pat dry with a lint free cloth and repeat until the surface rust has been removed. Dry in direct sunlight between applications.

Very often the application of lime juice will activate any residual warangan that the blade retains.

When the blade is clean, pat dry & drench with WD40, allow to dry overnight.
