Moro ????

Hello everyone,
I've had this spear for a couple of years now and the more I look at it the more I wonder if it is a Moro piece or not. The blade looks correct except that it does not have a chiseled collar at the base of the blade where it meets the shaft. Unfortunately as is the problem with way too many of these items the shaft has been cut down probably for ease of shipping. I am in the process now of making a new one for it now as I am tried of seeing it in this sad condition. Any help that can be offered on the positive identification of this would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Rick, Now that is beautiful !!! Love the detailed workmanship on the bands. The work on looks very similar to that on my ivory hilted gunong. Now that you have ask a question concerning the origin of your spear would you please post a photo showing the complete spear?

IMHO both are Moro.

This style of spear head is less obvious to pin down than the more common one with typical carving at the base of the blade. I'd posit that its origin is still recognizable by the overall flow of lines though.

I'm less convinced that the bands of Rick's example are as old as the blade; just a vague feeling...

Hello Kai and Jose,
Thank you both for the confirmation that my spear is indeed a Moro piece. Would either of you care to make a comment on the possible age of this item or from the area that it originated from? Again, thank you both for your help with this item as it is not from my normal area of interest. I suppose that from now I will have to admit that my area of collecting has changed and it will now be including more Moro items as well as the transitional items that I normally prefer.

Well, based on the type of brass/bronze sleeve, I am thinking Sulu.
