The blade is thin at only 3mm does not look like a true battle blade.

Interesting, and while Lew has pretty well covered the overview on this tulwar I am wondering what your observations and thoughts are on the weapon. Is there anything in particular you were wondering beyond what Lew has noted ?

Hello,

I'm afraid my knowledge is too limited to offer any substantial information, however I can make some comparisons to my tulwar sabres. Most of my information has come from very helpful members of this forum.

My tulwar have hilts that are often associated with Sikhs, with the rosette (or sun) pommel washer appears to points to Rajasthani work (the state). My tulwar have been suggested to be from the late 19th century. The sheath in your photo looks almost identical to mine, although it would seem that the hilt of your piece is similar to many I have found that are said to be from the 18th Century. Albeit hard to judge conclusively, but the hilt appears to be have been more intricate than of my pieces, which have also been linked to Indian state armouries. As far as blade thickness, Lew has offered an interesting view. The blades of my tulwar are only marginally thicker at 4 mm (not quite sure what this means). I have been told that battle tulwars widen slightly to the point, and are generally older, and hunting tulwars narrow slightly to the point, and are generally later. Is the blade in a condition that corresponds with the hilt? I know they do exist in this form, but the tulwar handle is designed in a way that almost contradicts a strait slashing blade. There is a good chance that a forum member more knowledgeable may correct me; but is it possible that, in judgement of the blade thickness and the older style hilt design, that this tulwar has been re-fitted with a newer blade sometime in its life?
