I just had a thought!
.... From somewhere in my dim past I remember that, while Lieutenant-General of Java, Raffles was so impressed by a young Raden Saleh that he sent him to India and recommended his superiors meet with the prince. From this meeting, Raden Saleh went on to the courts of Europe.
