Yes, I also think that the stone is glass. When the top cap is gilded it will be indeed gilded and not gold washed. When it would be only gold washed you would see at some places the silver under the wash, this isn't the case.
The lamination is very fine and wouldn't show a great contrast, but maybe I will give it a try.
