Allegedly Dubrovnik ships lasted twice as long which must have been a competitive advantage. In 1500s they had the 3rd largest merchant fleet after Spain and Netherlands. Salt production in nearby Ston accounted for 1/3 of city revenues. The city relied on a mercenary army.
