For my own collection I just started to use a MS Access database, but setting that up requires a slightly higher level of computer skills ( which I may not possess

). When its done it should be a very powerful tool though. What it lacks is the image handling abilities - or at least I have not figured out how to make nice displays of images. Currently I'm getting round this by using a link to a Picassa web album - which is free until you have a lot of photos e.g. :

The link can be one of the fields in the database record. I like this solution because it stores pictures offsite in case of computer loss, basically for insurance purposes - no good having a catalogue of your collection in the same place as the collection if it goes up in flames with it! For good measure I have the database backed up in the cloud.
