A good question mate.
I have not seen any period paintings close enough but I suspect, as these weapons all appear to be sash mounted, that it was for a safety chain.
Fig 215 quoted above shows a small silver loop chain, perhaps the sash was fed through this loop before being wrapped on the body.
Other suggestions
, a decorative or votive charm might have been hung from here....but I think a safety chain/loop....who wants to drop anything on the run.....
