Two old Timorese swords

These two swords came from a second auction at the same place I bought the Paiwan club that I posted yesterday. The auction house believes that they date from c. 1700 CE.

The auction pictures are...

Thanks drac. Yes, a very rare piece as you note. The edged weapons of the Taiwan native groups have become increasingly difficult to find and the prices for them have gone through the roof. I have...

Rare pre-1900 Paiwan club

I don't usually collect clubs, but I was very surprised to find this extremely rare Paiwan club on offer by an Australian auction house known for dealing in Oceanic and Asian antiques. I ended up...

Hi Detlef,

I agree that these appear to be a mainly 20thC feature. Also. I like that weave on the scabbard. It's a distinctive form, and I see it mainly on 20thC pieces. It would be good if one of...

Rob, no question that the sheath of the original post resembles sheaths from Luzon. However, the resemblance is not entirely convincing for me. In particular, the decorative area showing a face and...

It would be helpful to see a picture of the whole sword, but the evidence so far suggests this is a parang latok. Van Zonneveld says that the hilts on these are almost always wooden, but I have an...

Jim, you are spot on with the issues of trade and interconnectedness among the various Spanish colonies. There are clear cross-overs in style between Spanish knives in Mexico, broader Latin America,...

Also happens with Google Chrome. The issue is intermittent but can last for hours. No obvious reason why it comes and goes.

This is a problem for Lee who hosts the web site.

Hi Rob and Lee,

Interesting knife, Lee. I agree that there is a Spanish flavor to it. The short brass cross-guard with terminal balls plus a horn hilt is very consistent with a Spanish origin.

Detlef, outside of a Halmahera native with a particular interest in swords, I think you are probably the best person to render that opinion. Thank you again.

Sorry, forgot to address the area without "patina" on your sword. Perhaps this area has been cleaned for some reason or rubbed against a mildly abrasive surface. I've seen similar effects from the...

Thanks Rob! Nice example of the questions I have raised. The MOP inserts are a sign of the hilt having been decorated in Zamboanga. The horse hoof pommel is of a Sulu type, but its fairly extreme...

I'm interested to hear what our Indonesian experts think of this one and where it may be from. The blade has a shape reminiscent of a Moro kampilan, but much shorter. The back half of the blade...

It is surprising to me how often Moro kris are found with the hilt mounted backwards. That is to say that the beak of the kakatua pommel appears on the greneng side of the blade rather than the...
