Hi Iain

LOL, that's how it starts! With one spear ;)

The white metal inlay is of a reasonable silver content and oxidises to a dark grey quite quickly (as is often the case).
The 'gold'...

How wide is the blade at the hilt now? Perhaps it's narrow enough to be a swordstick?

HI Dyzner,

You should consider keeping it. It is a very good example that you'll struggle to easily replace.
It dates to the 19th century and I would classify it as 'indo-Persian'.
It shows...

Hi Richmond,

Your suspicions are correct. I'd call these decorative. They come in various slight varieties. Some seem to have very solid cast brass/bronze hilts, others somewhat thin metal hilts....

Hi Dzyner
Welcome to the forums.
Your Kard is a very nice example. The blade is wootz and the hilt slabs appear to my eye to be made from Walrus ivory.
Congratulations, it's a good piece indeed.

My best guess would be that this blade started out life in a configuration more akin to the one's I've shown above and in the link I sent you.
I suspect that it has been shortened from...

These are problematic at best.
I was examining a similar 'dirk' a few weeks ago and whilst beautifully made with a striking hamon, the overall feel didn't seem right for a wartime piece.
It also...

I've got a childs smallsword (so the pierced section is proportionally shorter) from the mid 18th with a pierced blade of similar type. Here is that section.

Hmmm, a puzzle! It could be pre 1700, it could even be mid 18thC or just beyond.
It might have been shortened or adapted from the hilt end as well.
How long is the blade from...

Hi Richard,

That's interesting. We see this exact type of Koftgari on many Dhal, Kula Khud and other items that I've long thought were made to supply the British in the first half of the 20thC.

Anglo-Indian Momento of Sam Brownes 22nd Cavalry in fine Koftgari

I thought you chaps might enjoy seeing this anglo-Indian steel cigarette box decorated to the 'legendary' Frontier force during it's time as the "22nd Sam Brownes Cavalry" (1904-1921).
It's of...
