Hello Yves. Welcome back.

I believe this is a 20th C piece based on the the treatment of the incised designs at the base of the blade and the likelihood (IMHO) that the gangya may not be separated...

Here is the daab/daav with a rounded tip and protrusion. I would say it is 19th C and for some time I thought it was Cambodian because of the pointed toe to the scabbard. More recently, I have come...

These rounded, rather spatulate forms of dha/daab are interesting. There is a fair bit of variety. There is also a form with a rounded tip and a small pointed protrusion. I have an example but need...

FSV,

There are some excellent Maori clubs that are worth consideration. These have a rather simple form, but the skill is in achieving the correct overall shape and in the carving/polishing. A...

Ed,

That Cleveland Museum piece is brilliant! However, FSV might be challenged to reproduce it given that it is made of "ironwood," which as its name suggests is an extremely dense hardwood and...

Hi Detlef,

I don't want to hijack Jeff's thread, but that second barung is older than your first, judging from the pommel, and you matched it with an older style of scabbard. Was that...

Yes, Detlef, that's the one--right before I came down with an illness that kept me off these pages for several years. I've never seen another barung treated in that manner.

Hi Jeff.

A 20th C Mindanao kris that seems to have been over-etched. I had a barung that was treated similarly. I think it may now belong to a fellow forumite.

The extent of over-etching starts...

Rick,

Your example also looks to be from a master craftsman. The intricate designs and inlaid stones are wonderful. I'm thinking this work is akin to Hindu art, and it also reminds me of some of...

I am very grateful that you posted this beautiful example of Javanese metalwork. It is exquisitely executed and of a very high standard. It appears virtually flawless. The pendok reminds me...

Hi again Maurice.

I love that second one. It has Sulu dress also. Very ornate blade with, I think, some talismanic symbolism. The hilt is an excellent example of its type.

Lumad (?) adaptation of a Malay sundang

This sword has an old Malayan kris wavy blade. The Malayan features are the octagonal hilt and the presence of a central fuller that starts at about 25% of the blade below the hilt, and runs all the...

Hi Rob,

Yes, I thought the same thing! The inscription is actually easier to see in the photographs than in hand. There might well have been a more complete name than just initials.

Hi drac,

As others have already noted, a northern African origin for these swords has been pretty much dismissed. That discussion is in the Archives. Instead, a Spanish Colonial origin from Latin...

Old Spanish (?) blade in Visayan dress

At first glance this one looks like a rather ordinary Visayan knife, But there is a bit more to it.

The blade is intriguing. It has an acutely pointed tip with a long back false edge. It is almost...

Very nice Malay sundang! The scabbard is Melayu. I think the pommel would be classified as danganon if this were a Moro kris. This must be an heirloom sword, which do not come on the market very...
