Visayan

Hi joshualayne,
I'm pretty sure SEA is correct. I think it is a Philippine blade from the Visayan islands. I think the short ferrule and swelling of the hilt next to the ferrule indicates the island...

Hi All,
Stone's description of warding with a sheath or keris is exactly the same technique that is used with Okinawan sai. The sai, which resemble European poingards save that they have no edge or...

Hi All,
There is also Myamoto Musashi (aka Ni Ten or two heavens) who developed a fighting style that used the katana and wakizashi simultaneously.

Thanks for the info

Hi Ferguson,
Thanks for posting the picture of your hilt. I have one very much like it but the pommel is missing. There is a square hole in the back of my hilt that the pommel must have plugged...

There is a work of fiction by Michael Creighton that has Ibn Fadlin as its main character. The story is about the spy mission. Originally called "The Eaters of the Dead", it has been...

telephone?

Hi All,
Much like the parlor game of telephone, perhaps the key lies neither in Portugese nor in Indonesian but in what the Indonesians thought they heard the Portugese say. For example, the...

Hi All,
I don't at all doubt that the sword posted by Freddy is closely related to mine however, I was not and, especially after Ian's post, am not all that sure about the accuracy of the museum's...

Freddy, I think you've nailed it

Hi Freddy,
I think you've found a mate to my piece. The museum blade has pretty much the same shape and appears to have a T-rib also. The hilt is also similar and has a brass ferrule plus a brass...

I'm with you Tim

Hi All,
I'm surprised that the dha folks haven't weighed in on this yet. For my part I agree with Tim's Nagaland/South East Asia contention. I have never seen a T-rib on any European trade blade....

sword id requested

Hi All,
Hopefully someone can Id this sword. I'm stumped. The T-rib blade measures 19" (48.26cm) and the hilt is 4.5" (11.43cm). At the hilt the spine measures 9/32" (7.5mm). The blade edge is...

Sulu it is then

Hi All,
Thanks for the info. Three for Three for Sulu pretty much nails it.
Kai, the blade is lightly etched but I can't seem to get my camera to pick up damascus patterns. I don't know if this is...

Indonesian Sundang or Philippine Kris?

Hi All,
I am hoping that the keris/kris experts can help me to resolve my questions about this piece. The straight blade is short (only 21" [53.34cm]) but the hilt at 4.75" [12cm] is full size. The...

Concealed Carry

Hi All,
A very nice piece. I would like to add one to my collection. It would appear that the tip has been broken off but the presence of a center rib indicates that this blade was meant for serious...

Wow Kino what a beauty! I would be interested to hear from the keris experts whether or not this is a panjang and if so, is it the shortest version of the panjang called a Bahari or is it...

Bangkung?

Hi Blu Erf,
The blade looks like a Philippine bangkung. I wonder if the Indonesians had a version of this sword also.

Not only do the hilt and wranka both appear to be kemmuning they also share the chevron design motif so I think, as I said from the start, that it's pretty likely that the hilt and...

Hi Spunjer,
