Excellent pics, Thanks for posting. 893 is an odd one! The comparison between falcatta and more eastern weapons (the kukri for sure) is made often. The earliest celtic peoples of Europe are called...

Maisy,

Thanks for posting the anecdote about the scribe's using the piha! that confirms something I've been told before.

Hi Scratch,
They vary a lot, but most fall between 11-12 inches total length. There are many distinct styles and blade shapes. The wider blades like this example are very heavy for their size. I...

Hi Spiral,

It has a grain like wood, but it's exceptionally smooth and dark.

I've currently got 25 really good examples. Some were Jerry Maskell's at one time (he had over 110 if I remember...

A slightly unique Piha Kaetta

There were several pihas included in a recent Australian estate sale. Several had unusual blades, but this one caught my eye. If ever there was a piha made for fighting, I think this one would be it....

Roano,

That really is fantastic work. You've obviously studied the details of the patterns on Ethiopian scabbards as well.

Slightly changing the topic, there is a piha currently offered at Lion's Gate with a very old hand written label that calls it a "pihiye", along with the phrase "Sinhalese hunter's knife".

That's...

Hi Charles,

That's a great piha, very complete. Based on the quality work it would almost have to have been made by the Pattal Hattara in Kandy (the king's royal workshops). They were not around...

Hi Jim,

I'd have to agree it's unlikely Prince Charles come by a kastane in Scotland! But he was after all born in Italy and then exiled in France. I'd guess he came across one during the latter...

Hi,

I just want to tell you that you have found a fantastic kastane for the price. I have seen examples in much poorer condition go for three times that. Congrats, it's a keeper.

As noted...

That is a VERY nice first kukri. There are so many poorly-made kukris with un-tempered, chromed blades out there that it's sometimes hard to weed through them to find the good ones.

They are...

I read this post and immediately saw an RSS feed from the BBC about a knife-related murder. The scare is on! Once the media start pounding an "issue", it's tough to fight the hysteria. Good luck...

Some "pre-1898" Military Kurkis

Hi guys,

I thought I would post these for the kukri fans. These are what AC calls "longleaf".

The letter that came with them says they are dated by the Royal Nepalese Army as pre-1898. Who...

I didn't mention this thread to debate whether the sword has been reworked. That's obvious. A blade of that quality with those kind of fittings would be like Michelangelo taking a...

Ending Shamshir Listing

Ebay has been a feeding frenzy lately. This is a perfect example. I see a decent old blade with a poorly executed rehilt and equally sorry silver (silver-alloy) work. The scabbard is new as well.

Tim,

I have never seen a wootz blade on a piha. Most look to be laminated and possibly some were differentially hardened similar to a Japanese sword. Many of mine have striations in steel very...

Hi Tim,
You did well for someone with different collecting priorities! That's a very complete piha. As Bill noted the scabbards can be the most rare piece.

I like the pattern in the brass (vine...
