You've got a couple of big problems....IF you use the fireplace.

One is that hot material will degrade (e.g. age) faster. Refrigerators work on the reverse principle, and forgers use sometimes...

If it's for manioc, I'd bet it's either a peeler or based on a peeler. You have to peel and/or shred the manioc root as part of the processing.

Hi Vandoo,

It's possible that the pata was a tongue, but I think something else is going on there.

For one thing, I remember that the archeologists dug up a whalebone pata somewhere around...

I guess I made those clubs, since I've made similar scrapes on my projects. Don't remember it, though. If you send them to me, I'll...

Classic case of foot in mouth disease. The illustrations of spears from Samoa look just like this. I've struck out trying to find a live version of one of those, but that's my bet. Meant east,...

Hi Tim,

I think you just made a better case for it being a trench weapon. A sailor probably could have borrowed a drill from the ship's carpenter, and he would have had time for craftsmanship. ...

Thanks for posting that advice, Nathaniel.

I'd add one test I use for testing saplings (or boards) for staffs. Stress them and see how they spring. Saplings are different, tree to tree, and you...

I'd suggest that the spear may be simply the head of what they call a "halberd" in English. The sabers could all be hudiedaos.

I suspect these are fairly recent wushu weapons, especially the...

Back when I was doing capoeira, one of the guys made a couple of berimbaus (musical bows) by hand-laminating the wood staves. They were gorgeous things, and they worked well under tension. But one...

Laminates...not so much. They're likely to split along the layers under repeated shocks, because each layer is going to warp differently, depending on where in the stick they are.

The other problem with osage orange is that the sap wood can get bug-eaten. Actually, that's true for any wood, but osage orange seems particularly prone to damage.

If you're back east, there are...

I think the Fijian one is carved...

I'm with Kahnjar on this one: it makes most sense as a trench club to me.

Looking at it again, I'm thinking more that it's a foil blade, coated with something. The taper is (probably) too extreme for bamboo. The color is irrelevant, since spray paint can be any color. ...

There's also Chinese hard rods, and I'd guess that's where Bruce Lee's getting his inspiration. Not that I don't like Jogo do pau, but that was pretty unknown outside Portugal until recently.
