ausjulius, werecow, krockew,

Thanks for your suggestions. Yes, the truong dao from Vietnam is another version of the dadao, hence its similarity to the original post (OP). However, the firm...

Korean (?) dadao

I got an excited message from a young collector friend last night that he had won a dadao on an online Belgian auction. It was a bringback by a Belgian military officer from the time of the Korean...

Tom, I agree with Battara. The silver should be cleaned, as well as the white metal on the scabbard (hard to say whether this is silver, probably not--could be nickel, white brass, or tin). The blade...

Thanks Thomas. I believe I see laminations in the distal end of the blade, above and adjacent to the spikes. The patination more proximally seems very dense and could mask lamination.

Hi Rob. I'm sure of very little about this item. The markings at forte are cut into the steel. The edges below the two spikes are said to have been sharpened. Any thoughts why?

Hi Xas,

Good to see you posting another interesting kris. The snake (naga) motif on Maranao pieces in particular seems well established, but I think it may not go back very far. I posted a...

Thanks Ed, might well be a tool, but I don't know what it would be used for. Unusual to see a small brass (?) disk guard on a tool, but could be.

Question Weird "sword"

This one was sold recently at auction. It is not mine and the attached images are from the auction site.

This sword length object (OAL = 29.25 in.) has an unusual blade that appears to be old....

Pertinax, you have written a bleak requiem for the flyssa form. It seems that few flyssa we see on the market and in auctions today are of the traditional style and manufacture. The "wedding...

This may be a relatively recent stok komando made popular by President Sukarno. Basically a swagger stick with a concealed blade, sometimes an old tombak. There was discussion of these here...

Rob, looking at the end of the hilt, where the tang peeps through, I think this hilt has been in place a long time—perhaps back to the 19th C. I don't think you have a piece that was cobbled together...

Old barung with small silver punto

This barung likely dates from the late 19th C. The blade is laminated and retains a sharp edge. The hilt has a small silver punto, only 1.5 in. in length, usually indicating its owner came from one...

Unusual large Moro barung

A large heavy barung with a swedged spine for almost its entire length. The back edge is peaked but not sharpened. This treatment of the spine is unusual on barung, but not unique. I have seen...

Rob,

I think your blade with a triangular cross-section is likely Spanish Colonial and 19th C in manufacture. As such, the blade may have been made in Luzon, and I don't see much to indicate a...

Hello Yves,

An interesting kris. I agree with your assessment that this is probably not a Mindanao kris, but I'm not convinced that it was made entirely by Tausug craftsmen. The scabbard and hilt...

Rob,

Coming back to your knife at the start of this thread, I think it might be an example from the area where the s'boula and shula coexist on Waelty's map. In other words, a local hybrid of the...
