It looked like a separate gangya, so probably early 1900's. The "expert" said it was 18th century, so 1700's? I doubt it. But I would have paid $100 for the blade.

Very nice. A great honest piece. I'll bet that the stuff on the blade is grease, not varnish. But either way a solvent like acetone should remove it. If you can slip the rattan bands off the scabbard...
