I would not try to remove varnish from the rattan.
Either mechanical or with detergents, it will not improve the condition of the rattan imo.

According to Ben, the top handle is old style, I assume the rattan work is also the old style, old patina, old resin....

small decorations on the spine are good. You can find them in all kinds of variations. I dont think they are...

The scabbard is indeed very plain, this is not always an indication of age....

FACEGRIP MANDAU FROM BORNEO

A Mandau with an unusual facegrip

Probably from the Kayan of the Baram area in Sarawak.
The carved spiritface is looking to the left,
which gives the sword a powerfull expression when carried....
